Germany's Solid-State Battery Race: How VW PowerCo, BMW, and Mercedes Are Betting on the Next Cell
Germany's carmakers spent years buying batteries from Asia. Now, with Volkswagen's PowerCo building its own gigafactories and BMW and Mercedes locking in U.S. solid-state partners, the country is trying to own the next generation of cell chemistry too. Here is where the German solid-state push actually stands in late 2026 — and how far it really is from your driveway.

Why Germany is building its own cell company
Volkswagen spun its battery business into PowerCo in 2022 with a plan to invest more than €20 billion with partners by 2030. PowerCo runs a "Unified Cell" format designed to accept LMC, LFP, sodium-ion and eventually solid-state chemistry in one physical shape, so VW can shift recipes without rebuilding factories. Its three gigafactories are:
- Salzgitter, Germany — producing since December 2025, NMC first with LFP to follow, up to 20 GWh rising toward 40 GWh.
- Valencia, Spain — under construction; VW's stated target is 2026, but Spanish trade press (citing the Perte VEC program and slower EV demand) reports series production slipping to July 2027.
- St. Thomas, Canada — under construction, up to 90 GWh, planned for 2027.
Together the three sites target around 200 GWh of annual capacity, supplying roughly half of VW Group's cell demand.

Volkswagen + QuantumScape: the 40 GWh license
Volkswagen holds about a 17% stake in QuantumScape and signed a non-exclusive manufacturing license in July 2024, expanded in July 2025, letting PowerCo build up to 40 GWh/yr of QuantumScape solid-state lithium-metal cells (expandable to 80 GWh), with up to $131 million in milestone payments through 2027. QuantumScape shipped B0-sample 24-layer FlexFrame cells to PowerCo in 2025 for automotive qualification; its QSE-5 design targets roughly 800 Wh/L and 15-minute charging. Both companies stress this is still a licensing and development relationship, not active mass production.

BMW + Solid Power: validation in an i7 mule
BMW licenses Solid Power's sulfide electrolyte and is running validation prototypes in an i7 test mule, targeting a demonstration vehicle before 2030 and citing 800+ km range for its Neue Klasse platform. Solid Power supplies electrolyte and cell-design IP; BMW does the pack and vehicle integration. Mercedes-Benz took a different route, partnering with Factorial Energy on FEST solid-state cells, with testing in 2026 and a stated 2027 target for models such as the EQS and AMG EVs (around 900 km claimed). Factorial is also supplying Stellantis, whose Dodge Charger Daytona demonstrator fleet validated 77 Ah FEST cells in 2025.

The realistic timeline — and why halo cars come first
Industry trackers broadly agree the window looks like this: 2026 — semi-solid packs in low-volume premium cars (CATL, Factorial), but no fully solid-state consumer EV; 2027 — first low-volume fully solid-state EVs from Toyota and a Samsung SDI partner, at halo prices; 2028 — Nissan's launch-ready solid-state EV and early QuantumScape/PowerCo pilot volume; 2029–2032 — cost curves close toward $90–100/kWh and the chemistry trickles into the mainstream $40–60k segment. Early pilot lines still report 60–75% yields versus 95%+ for liquid cells, and the solid electrolyte needs external stack pressure of 1–5 MPa over a 10-year life — the core reason mass production is still years out.

China Angle
China is on a parallel but faster bridge path. Semi-solid (固液混合) cells are already mass-produced and on the road: WeLion (卫蓝新能源) supplies NIO's 150 kWh pack with 1,200 km editions; QingTao Energy (清陶能源) with SAIC (上汽) ships semi-solid in the IM Motors L6/L7 and MG at mainstream prices; Dongfeng (东风) with Ganfeng (赣锋锂业) put a 350 Wh/kg semi-solid cell into production in September 2026; CATL's (宁德时代) condensed semi-solid began volume packing in the second half of 2026.
On the all-solid (全固态) side, pilot lines are dense but pre-volume. CATL runs sulfide all-solid pilot lines — a 5 GWh line in Hefei (online May 2025) and a Yibin base whose first phase came online in July 2026, with lab samples above 500 Wh/kg. BYD (比亚迪) opened a 2 GWh sulfide pilot in Shenzhen Pingshan in February 2026 (yield ~82%) and is building a 20 GWh line in Chongqing Bishan, with a ~1,000-unit demo planned for early 2027; its prototype has shown a 1,218 km CLTC range and passed CATARC (中汽研) safety tests. Gotion (国轩高科) has a 0.2 GWh line above 90% yield with a 2 GWh line due by end-2026. The New Battery Industry Development 15th Five-Year Plan (新型电池产业发展"十五五"规划, issued by MIIT and six other ministries ahead of the National Day holiday 2026) sets the goal of initial scaled all-solid application by 2030. As of late 2026, no fully solid-state cell is in volume consumer production in China either — semi-solid is the bridge, full-solid is still in pilot and demo.

What it means for buyers
If you are shopping in 2026, solid-state should not change your decision: today's LFP and NMC packs are the better value, and the first solid-state cars will be six-figure halo models. The German programs matter because they decide whether VW, BMW and Mercedes can cut cell cost and reduce Asia dependence by the early 2030s — but the cells you can actually buy this year are still liquid-electrolyte.
