Spain's Battery Gigafactory Finally Fires Up: PowerCo Sagunto Begins LFP Cell Production
After more than three years of groundwork, Volkswagen's battery arm PowerCo has started producing cells at its Sagunto gigafactory in Valencia — Spain's first large-scale battery cell plant and one of the clearest signals yet that Europe is trying to localise the heart of the EV. As of late September 2026, the line is running LFP chemistry first. Here is what is being built, why LFP leads, and what it means for European battery sovereignty.
Why Sagunto matters
Europe still imports the vast majority of its EV battery cells from Asia, and the EU's climate and industrial plans assume a domestic supply. PowerCo Sagunto is Volkswagen Group's bet on closing that gap: a cell plant inside the eurozone, feeding the group's own car assembly lines rather than a third-party pack assembler. It sits inside Spain's wider electrification push, which targets 5.5 million electrified vehicles of all types by 2030 under the national energy and climate plan (PNIEC).
What is being built
The site is in Sagunto, north of Valencia, covering roughly 130 hectares. Total investment is about €3 billion. PowerCo broke ground in March 2023, erected its first cell-production block within a year, and has since installed the "clean and dry rooms" — about 57,000 m² across 17 rooms held below 1% humidity — that protect cathodes and electrolytes during cell making.
Capacity is the number to watch. The project was first announced at 40 GWh initial, scalable toward 60 GWh, but the current phase-one target is around 20 GWh. Workforce is already substantial: about 1,400 people were on site in 2025, PowerCo is hiring roughly 500 operators through 2026, and direct employment is expected to reach about 1,600 at full phase-one output.

LFP first — and why
Production started at the end of September 2026, and PowerCo is beginning with LFP (lithium iron phosphate) cells. The stated reason is demand: LFP is cheaper and good enough for the high-volume VW Group models the plant is meant to supply, so it anchors the ramp before more demanding chemistries join the line. The Sagunto line is built on PowerCo's Unified Cell concept — a standardised format flexible enough to run LFP now and NMC later, with sodium-ion and solid-state described as future options.
Powered by renewables
The gigafactory is designed to run on renewable electricity. The original plan paired the plant with a dedicated solar farm (around 250 hectares), and PowerCo has continued to develop on-site photovoltaic capacity so the cell-making draws from solar and wind rather than the fossil mix. For a product whose carbon footprint is increasingly a sales criterion in Europe, the green-power story is part of the pitch.
Who it supplies
Output is earmarked for Volkswagen Group plants in Spain and the rest of Europe — Martorell (Seat/Cupra) and Landaben (Pamplona) among them — with rail logistics positioned as the backbone of outbound flow. Localising cells inside the EU shortens a supply chain that today runs through Asia and buffers the group against both tariffs and freight shocks.
China Angle
China shows how far ahead scale can get. According to the China Automotive Power Battery Innovation Alliance, LFP batteries made up 82.8% of China's power-battery installations in the first nine months of 2026 (477.2 GWh of 576.3 GWh), with the June 2026 share peaking at a record 83.3%. CATL and BYD together held about 60% of China's installed market (CATL ~42.7%, BYD ~18.5% in June 2026). The contrast in build-out is stark: industry estimates cited in a listed-company half-year report put China's newly planned lithium-battery projects in the first half of 2026 alone at more than 65, with combined planned capacity above 1,500 GWh — versus Sagunto's ~20 GWh phase one.
Scale cuts both ways. China's battery sector is also wrestling with overcapacity and a brutal price war: the number of companies with installations fell to 37 in the first five months of 2026 from 50 a year earlier. And Beijing is raising the floor on safety — the mandatory national standard GB38031-2025 ("no fire, no explosion") took effect on July 1, 2026, pushing the industry toward higher-quality cells. Sagunto's LFP-first start is, in a sense, following the chemistry China proved at volume; Europe is just arriving years later and at a fraction of the scale.
Takeaway
Sagunto is less a finished triumph than afoot in the door. A 20 GWh phase one is small next to China's gigafactories, but it is the first of its kind for Spain and a template for European cell-making — LFP to start, flexible chemistry after, renewable-powered, and tied directly to local car plants. If the ramp holds through 2027, "made in Spain" will mean the cells, not just the cars.
