China NEV Roundup (Sep 18): XPeng G9L & GAC Aion i60 Lock Prices, EU Eyes PHEV Export Cap, 8-Mo Exports +67%

China's EV story this week shifted from a launch frenzy to the numbers behind it. With XPeng's G9L and GAC Aion's i60 now showing locked final prices, Beijing reported eight-month vehicle exports up two-thirds and Brussels floated a "voluntary" cap on Chinese plug-in hybrids — a direct signal that the PHEV/EREV export boom is now a trade-policy flashpoint.

1. XPeng G9L goes on sale — final prices locked, BEV + EREV from ¥231,800

XPeng formally launched the G9L "golden five-seat tech flagship" on September 17, confirming six variants after an August 11 presale that started at ¥259,800. The official guide price is ¥241,800–¥319,800, with a limited-time offer of ¥231,800–¥309,800 (≈$32,300–$43,200 USD) valid for orders before November 15.

The line spans BEV and "super range-extender" (EREV) powertrains. BEV versions deliver 660/702/755 km CLTC; the EREV uses a 1.5T unit, a 63.3 kWh battery and a 60 L tank for 435 km electric range and 1,602 km combined. All variants get an 800 V platform with 5C charging (10–80% in about 11 minutes), dual-chamber air suspension, rear-wheel steering (5.4 m turning radius) and up to three in-house Turing AI chips (2,250 TOPS). XPeng also confirmed right-hand-drive production and a Paris global debut on October 12, with output from both its Guangzhou and Graz, Austria plants.

2. GAC Aion i60 lands with final prices — EREV 1,738 km, BEV 700 km from ¥111,600

GAC Aion confirmed pricing for the i60 on September 15 after a presale where figures were "to be confirmed." The compact SUV ranges ¥111,600–¥142,800 (≈$15,600–$19,900 USD) across EREV and BEV powertrains.

The EREV "1738" versions pair a 1.5 L range extender with up to 350 km CLTC electric range and a 1,738 km total; BEV versions offer 520/530/700 km. The i60 also debuts WeRide-derived ADAS hardware (LiDAR trims at ¥142,800). It is one of the most affordable long-range EREV crossovers in the Chinese market.

3. FAW Bestune Yueyi 07 launches — PHEV from ¥124,900

FAW's Bestune brand put the Yueyi 07 PHEV on sale September 15 at ¥124,900–¥139,900 (≈$17,400–$19,500 USD), with 150 km and 235 km CLTC electric ranges. A 1.5 T engine pairs with a DHT and dual-motor layouts (up to 386/620 N·m), positioning it as a budget family plug-in crossover in the B-SUV segment.

4. M-Hero X700 interior revealed — Huawei HarmonySpace 6, dual zero-gravity seats

Dongfeng's luxury off-road brand M-Hero debuted the X700 interior on September 17. The "smart all-terrain SUV" adopts Huawei's HarmonySpace 6 cockpit, dual 127° zero-gravity seats, a flat-floor second row and 56 storage compartments, targeting urban commuting, long trips and light overlanding. Powertrain and pricing were not disclosed at the reveal.

5. EU asks China to "voluntarily" cap plug-in hybrid exports to 15%

The Financial Times reported September 17 that the EU has formally asked China to voluntarily limit shipments of plug-in hybrids and hybrids to the bloc, aiming to pull the Chinese share down to about 15% from more than a third. Monthly EU imports of Chinese PHEVs/HEVs rose more than 10× — from ~3,800 units in October 2024 to ~50,000 in July 2026 — and the PHEV share of China's auto exports climbed from 6% to 24%. Brussels threatens higher tariffs if Beijing declines; a minister-level video talk was held September 17 and a further visit is expected in early October. This directly targets the PHEV/EREV models (BYD, Chery, Leapmotor) that have surged into Europe precisely because they face only the 10% base tariff, versus up to ~45% on BEVs.

6. China's eight-month vehicle exports hit 7.153M, +66.7%; NEV exports +120%

The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) data, reported September 18, show China exported 7.153 million vehicles in the first eight months, up 66.7% year-on-year and already past full-year 2025. New-energy vehicle exports reached 3.435 million, up roughly 1.2×, with August alone at 1.01 million — the third straight month above the million mark. Full-year exports are forecast near 11 million. The flip side: domestic NEV passenger retail fell about 12.1% to 6.674 million in the same period, underscoring that export growth is masking a soft home market.

7. BYD's long-term Europe plan: three assembly plants + one battery factory

Speaking in Turin on September 16, BYD's European adviser (ex-FCA) said the maker ultimately plans three vehicle-assembly plants and one battery factory in Europe, with the second site's location to be chosen by year-end (Spain and France are priorities; it favors acquiring and retrofitting existing plants over greenfield). The Hungarian plant is already producing. The push is driven by EU local-content rules and tariffs: BYD's overseas sales rose 85.72% to 1,162,260 in eight months, with August's 189,466 a record (43% of monthly volume).

8. XPeng weighs licensing tech to more foreign automakers

Reuters reported September 17 that XPeng plans to offer its tech stack — E/E architecture, smart cockpit, Turing AI chips and ADAS software — to overseas clients beyond Volkswagen, potentially extending to Robotaxi and humanoid-robot "physical AI." The motive is margin: XPeng's Q2 service revenue jumped 93.9% to ¥2.7B with a 75.1% gross margin, versus a 12.1% vehicle gross margin and a ¥1.34B net loss. It mirrors a broader shift from "selling cars" to "selling platforms."

9. Nine ministries unveil plan to make China a "world auto power" by 2030

At a September 15 industry forum, the China EV 100 research body previewed a nine-ministry MIIT plan (released September) targeting world-leading auto-industry status by 2030. The emphasis is shifting from vehicle sales and NEV penetration to full supply-chain resilience — batteries, chips, software, overseas manufacturing, after-sales and energy infrastructure. Chairman Zhang Yongwei warned that export growth must be matched by local after-sales networks and cautioned most against heavy overseas fixed-asset bets given geopolitical risk.

10. NEV heavy trucks surge — H1 up 85% as short-haul goes electric

A September 18 briefing highlighted China's NEV commercial-vehicle breakout: heavy-truck NEV sales rose 85% in H1 to 126,200 units (after +192% to 197,600 in 2025), with July penetration hitting a record 47.3%. Short, closed-loop routes (ports, mines, steel mills) already beat diesel on payback of 18–28 months. A 2030 target of 40% penetration is seen as conservative; CATL's chief scientist forecasts 50% by 2028. Long-haul remains diesel/LNG's stronghold pending bigger batteries and unified swap networks.
