China EV News Roundup — October 21, 2026: BYD Puts 5-Minute Flash Charging in Its Cheapest Car, Cadillac and Changan Widen the PHEV/EREV Lineup, Li Auto Unveils In-House Batteries

China's EV makers packed October 21 with fresh launches and technology reveals. BYD brought its five-minute flash-charging architecture down to a car that starts under $10,000, Cadillac and Changan broadened the plug-in and range-extender choices, and Li Auto showed the in-house battery system it will stake its next generation on. Here is today's roundup.

1. BYD launches the second-generation Seagull with 5-minute flash charging from ¥65,900

BYD on October 20 put the fully redesigned Seagull on sale, and for the first time fitted its flash-charging system to the brand's cheapest car. The line starts at ¥65,900 (approx. $9,800 USD, indicative only), or ¥62,900 with the trade-in allowance, and runs to ¥99,900.

  • The three upper trims (from ¥75,900) carry a 39.2 kWh battery and a 420 km CLTC range and support flash charging — BYD says 10% to 70% in about five minutes at a dedicated station, or 10% to 97% in roughly nine minutes at room temperature.
  • The two base trims (¥65,900 / ¥72,900) use a 30 kWh pack with a 320 km CLTC range and come with a free 7 kW home charger instead of flash charging.
  • The car is bigger than before — 4,205 mm long with a 2,650 mm wheelbase, now seating five — switches to rear-wheel drive (85 or 95 kW), gains multi-link rear suspension, and is rated at about 9 kWh/100 km.

The launch matters because BYD is pushing its flash-charging network hard: the company said it had built 12,165 flash-charging stations in China by October 7 — including 2,111 on highways covering 341 cities — and is targeting 20,000 by the end of 2026.

2. Cadillac widens the XT5 PHEV with a new ¥239,900 "Air" trim

Cadillac added a new entry "Air" trim to the XT5 PHEV on October 16, priced from ¥239,900 (limited-time, against a ¥290,000 list), below the existing Pro (¥259,900) and Pro Max (¥279,900) after benefits. The move pulls a mid-size luxury plug-in hybrid SUV under the ¥240,000 line while keeping the core hardware.

The XT5 PHEV pairs a 1.5T engine with front and rear motors on a dual-clutch DHT, for a combined 385 kW / 740 N·m and a 0–100 km/h in 4.8 s. A 35.5 kWh Ultium battery delivers 215 km CLTC pure-electric range and 1,360 km combined, with 5C charging (30–80% in about 15 minutes) and 6 kW vehicle-to-load output. The Pro and above trims carry a roof lidar and Momenta R7 city NOA.

3. Changan Qiyuan E07 lands as a shape-shifting SUV — BEV from ¥199,900, EREV from ¥209,900

Changan on October 21 launched the Qiyuan E07, a "panoramic smart variable SUV" that blends a luxury crossover with a pickup-style rear. Prices run ¥199,900–319,900 across seven trims: four BEV (¥199,900–319,900) and three EREV (¥209,900–299,900).

  • BEV versions use 70/90 kWh packs for 551 / 651 / 701 km CLTC; the range-extender uses a 39 kWh pack for 180 / 200 km of electric range plus a 1.5L range extender.
  • It is the first production model on Changan's SDA "Tianshu" central-computing architecture, with the Tianheng intelligent chassis, Tianyu OS and Tianyu intelligent range-extender system, about 254 TOPS of compute and 800V charging (15 minutes adds roughly 365 km).
  • Dimensions are 5,045 × 1,996 mm with a 3,120 mm wheelbase; a sliding rear canopy and drop-down tailgate let it convert toward a pickup format.

4. MG 07 PHEV opens presale from ¥105,900 after subsidy

SAIC's MG brand opened presales for the MG 07 PHEV, starting at ¥105,900 after subsidy (approx. $15,800 USD, indicative only), with high-level lidar-assisted driving brought below the ¥120,000 mark. Final pricing and on-sale date are to be confirmed at launch. The plug-in hybrid sedan is MG's latest attempt to defend the brand's strong showing in China's mainstream electrified sedan segment.

5. Li Auto's Power Day: in-house "Lianshan" battery system, 5C cells, and a lifetime fire pledge

At its Power Day on October 21, Li Auto unveiled the "Lianshan" (连山) in-house electric system and a self-developed 5C battery, confirmed for the updated L8, whose pure-electric range rises to 430 km. The company also introduced a battery-safety guarantee: if an in-house battery catches fire, Li Auto will replace the vehicle, and it will cover the gap if third-party insurance does not.

The reveal marks Li Auto's shift from CATL-sourced cells toward batteries built with its Sunwoda joint venture. Separately, the 2026 i6 was dated for an October 28 launch with up to 780 km CLTC (about 8% more than the outgoing version).

6. CATL's Q3 and a heavy-truck battery with a range-extender variant

CATL reported third-quarter results inside a nine-month total of ¥442.1 billion revenue and ¥64.5 billion net profit; the single quarter's net profit rose 14.54% year-on-year on revenue up 58.58%. Alongside the earnings, CATL launched the Tianxing II heavy-duty-truck battery, including an "electric-plus-electric range-extender" version — a swappable main pack paired with a 77 kWh range-extender battery — that went into production immediately with 13,000 units already signed.

7. NIO's Firefly brand preps a 60 kWh battery swap that lifts range to 560 km

NIO's affordable Firefly brand will introduce a 60 kWh CATL battery on October 23, raising CLTC range from 420 to 560 km and letting existing owners upgrade through compatible fifth-generation swap stations. With roughly 90,000 Firefly vehicles already delivered, the upgrade tests how far battery swapping can extend the life of an owned car.

8. Leapmotor's Spain plant now builds cars and batteries together

Leapmotor said its Spanish plant — built with Stellantis — has begun producing both vehicles and batteries on the same site, making it the first Chinese EV maker in Europe to locally build cars and cells together. The milestone underscores how Chinese brands are shifting from finished-vehicle export to in-region manufacturing as trade barriers rise.

More launches and numbers this week

  • BAIC Xingtan 5X opened presales on October 21 as part of a crowded late-October launch week that also includes the Jetta M6 (Oct 22) and Roewe Jiayue 07 (Oct 23).
  • Volkswagen ID. AURA T6 — the China-developed compact BEV — reported 33,022 locked orders in its first full sales month, with over 90% choosing the lidar version.
  • Overseas, BYD is expanding its Saudi dealer network toward ten locations and Li Auto introduced the L9 in the UAE with heat and charging adaptations; Chery plans to bring its premium Exlantix brand to Australia around mid-2027.
  • On trade, the EU's final anti-dumping duties on Chinese passenger-car tires landed at up to 57.09%, pushing more export orders toward ASEAN.
