Indonesia's EV Charging Puzzle: CCS2, GB/T, and a Fast-Growing Public Network

If you buy an EV in Indonesia in 2026, the biggest surprise is not the range — it is the plug. Unlike Europe (CCS2) or China (GB/T), Indonesia is building its network on a mixed but increasingly standardized footing, and the arrival of Chinese brands is making the connector question matter more than ever. Here is how Indonesia's charging standards and public network actually work.

The connector standards on the ground

Indonesia's national DC fast-charging standard is CCS2 (Combined Charging System Type 2), the same connector used across Europe and by most Asian EVs sold there (Hyundai, Wuling, Toyota bZ4X, Honda e:N1). Slower AC charging uses the Type 2 (Mennekes) socket. The older Japanese CHAdeMO standard still appears on Nissan Leaf and some Mitsubishi models but is clearly declining as CCS2 wins globally.

The wrinkle: Chinese-made EVs use GB/T, China's national standard. As BYD, Chery, Wuling and GAC Aion scale up local sales and assembly, a meaningful share of cars on Indonesian roads speak a different "plug language." Most public operators in Indonesia deploy CCS2, so GB/T cars typically rely on either a manufacturer-supplied adapter or multi-standard chargers that some operators are beginning to install to serve both populations.

How fast is "fast"? The SPKLU network

Indonesia's public chargers are called SPKLU (Stasiun Pengisian Kendaraan Listrik Umum). In 2026 the network is shifting from 50 kW units (which can take over an hour) to ultra-fast 150–350 kW DC stations:

  • A 350 kW SPKLU fills a Hyundai Ioniq 5 from 10% to 80% in roughly 18 minutes; a BYD Seal about 26 minutes; a Tesla Model 3 about 25 minutes.
  • PLN (the state utility) operates strategic sites: 350 kW at the KM 19 Jakarta–Merak and KM 695 Surabaya–Gempol toll rest areas; 200 kW at KM 57 (Karawang) and Soekarno-Hatta airport; and 150 kW sites in Daan Mogot (Jakarta), Nusa Dua (Bali), MM2100 (Cikarang), Solo, Makassar and Palembang. Tariffs at the KM 19 site are around Rp2,466/kWh.
  • A new SPKLU Center in Tanjung Priok (North Jakarta) bundles 2×200 kW + 6×120 kW ultra-fast units plus a 22 kW AC unit, all CCS2 + AC.

The private build-out: iGreen+ and the capacity crunch

Private operators are racing to fill gaps. iGreen+ runs 19 stations with 132 charging connectors (120 kW CCS2 each) across Jakarta, Banten, West Java, Yogyakarta and Bali, and targets up to 200 SPKLU points. One Jakarta site (at the Pos Indonesia HQ) has served 200+ users per day since soft-launch in mid-July 2026 — a sign demand is outpacing supply at popular locations, where peak-hour speeds can slump.

Home charging: the quiet majority

Public stations grab headlines, but most Indonesian EV owners charge at home. PLN reported serving about 33,086 home-charging customers as of March 2025. Home charging is cheapest (see the Tips piece), but many urban dwellers in apartments face the same "no dedicated parking + no wallbox" barrier seen in Europe and Korea.

Why the standard question decides adoption

A fragmented connector landscape confuses first-time buyers and wastes public investment. Indonesia's policy (Presidential Regulation No. 55/2019, updated by No. 79/2023, plus an ESDM SPKLU roadmap through 2030) backs CCS2 as the common DC standard while allowing multi-standard hardware. The practical lesson from mature markets: pick one dominant DC standard, blanket cities and toll corridors with ultra-fast CCS2, and let home/AC charging handle daily needs.

China Angle

China — the world's largest NEV market — standardized on GB/T nationally and paired it with the planet's biggest charger base (millions of public and private points, plus battery-swap networks). As Chinese brands bring GB/T vehicles to Indonesia, the country faces the same "two standards, one market" tension China long ago resolved by making GB/T mandatory. Indonesia's CCS2-first stance is cleaner for consumers, but it means Chinese imports need adapters or multi-standard chargers near term. The upside: Indonesia can leapfrog by studying China's playbook — standardize fast, subsidize home charging, and string ultra-fast corridors along Java's toll roads before demand forces it.
