How to Plan an EV Road Trip in 2026: ABRP, PlugShare, and Region-by-Region Charging Reality
Planning a long EV trip in 2026 is easier than ever — but the playbook changes by region. Charging networks, connector standards, apps, and payment methods are not the same in the United States, Europe, Australia, Thailand, and Indonesia. This guide gives you the universal rules first, then a practical, region-by-region breakdown so you arrive with a plan instead of anxiety.

The golden rules (every region)
- Charge 20→80%. DC fast charging is fastest in the middle band; the last 20% takes as long as the prior 60%. On travel days, skip 100%.
- Precondition the battery. Set the charger as your destination in the car's nav so the pack warms (or cools) to optimum temperature before you arrive — often 15–20 minutes faster per stop.
- Stack charging on meals. A 20–30 minute DC session covers lunch or coffee; you barely lose time.
- Always have a Plan B. Know the next charger within 10–20 km of every stop. Chargers go offline or get queued.
- Expect 15–30% less than rated range at highway speed or in cold weather. Plan with the lower number.
The tools worth installing
- A Better Route Planner (ABRP) — the gold standard. Models your exact car, elevation, weather, and charger availability; premium adds live state-of-charge from your car.
- PlugShare — crowdsourced reliability ratings, photos, and recent check-ins; indispensable everywhere.
- Network apps — many networks still favour their own app or RFID card over tap-to-pay, especially outside North America.
United States
- Networks: Tesla Supercharger (NACS) is the densest; Electrify America, EVgo, and ChargePoint cover most corridors.
- Connector: NACS (Tesla) and CCS1. A NACS→CCS adapter unlocks Superchargers for most non-Tesla EVs — roughly doubles your fast-charging options.
- Tip: Major highways have DC fast charging roughly every 50 miles. Charge overnight at a Level 2 hotel charger when you can, and pack a portable Level 1/2 EVSE as a motel-outlet safety net.
Europe
- Networks: Ionity, Allego, Fastned, Shell Recharge, and regional operators; roaming is improving but accounts still help.
- Connector: CCS2 (DC) and Type 2 (AC) — universal across the continent.
- Density: Excellent in the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, and the Nordics; more variable in rural Mediterranean and coastal areas. Tap-to-pay is spreading but not universal — set up accounts (Ionity, Allego, etc.) before departure.
- Tip: Book a hotel with a Type 2 charger and start each day near 100%. On long gaps (e.g., rural Spain or Norway fjords), charge to 90–100% before leaving the dense zone.
Australia
- Networks: Chargefox, Evie Networks, and Tesla Supercharger lead; state bodies (e.g., NRMA) fill gaps.
- Connector: CCS2 and Type 2 — same as Europe.
- Reality: Distances are huge and outback coverage is sparse. Plan conservatively; ABRP is essential. Charge to 90–100% before leaving a city, and carry a backup plan for every remote leg.
- Tip: In capital cities and along the east coast, density is good; once you head inland, gaps widen fast.
Thailand
- Scale: ~3,700 stations / ~11,600 charge points (2024), targeting 12,000 DC fast chargers by 2030; government goal of chargers within 200 km on major highways by 2026.
- Networks: PTT EV Station PluZ (market leader, ~30% share, 600+ stations), EA Anywhere (Energy Absolute; ~550 stations, 2,800+ points, up to 150 kW CCS2, flat 7.11 THB/kWh — dense on highway corridors out of Bangkok), and PEA VOLTA (cheapest rates, broad coverage). Shell Recharge also present.
- Connector: CCS2 dominant, plus CHAdeMO and Type 2 at many sites.
- Payment: Mostly app-based (register PTT, EA, PEA VOLTA before you travel). Some newer units take contactless cards.
- Tip: Bangkok and the main corridors (Bangkok–Pattaya, Hua Hin, Khao Yai) are easy; upcountry is thinner. EA Anywhere every 50–80 km on key routes makes road trips practical.
Indonesia
- Scale & plan: PLN (state utility) leads deployment under Presidential Regulation 79/2023; national target ~32,000 public charging stations by 2030 with ~USD 3.7B pledged. Home charging gets a 30% off-peak discount.
- Connector: CCS2 standardised for DC; Type 2 for AC. CHAdeMO/GB/T share is small and declining.
- Reality: Charging is concentrated in Java and Sumatra; eastern regions and small islands are under-served, and inter-island travel is limited. AC charging is ~75% of public points; DC is growing (50–350 kW) along the Trans-Java corridor.
- Tip: Plan around Java for now. Two-wheelers lean on battery swapping rather than plug-in charging — a different model entirely. Carry a portable charger and rely on malls/hotels for AC top-ups.
Packing essentials
- NACS→CCS (or CCS→NACS) adapter depending on your car and region.
- Portable Level 1/2 EVSE — any standard outlet becomes an overnight top-up.
