China EV News Roundup — October 26, 2026: NIO and Denza Refresh Their Flagships, BYD Sharpens the Qin, and Week-42 Orders Cool After the Holiday
China's EV market breathed out this week after the National Day holiday rush. Fresh flagship launches from NIO and Denza, a sharper BYD Qin L DM-i, and Li Auto's EREV lineup headlined a calmer but still fiercely competitive week, while the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) teased the next wave of models and Chinese brands kept gaining ground abroad.
NIO ES8 enters a new generation with a 900 km-class battery
NIO launched the all-new ES8 on October 18, built on its NT3.0 platform and equipped with a 150 kWh semi-solid-state battery that pushes range past 900 km. The flagship SUV also gets a comprehensively upgraded smart chassis. The ES8 has long been NIO's volume anchor in the premium three-row segment, and the new generation leans harder into range and ride comfort as competition from Li Auto and Zeekr intensifies.

Denza D9 2027 and BYD Qin L DM-i sharpen the value lineup
Two BYD-group refreshes landed in the same mid-October window. The Denza D9 2027 went on sale October 16 with fifth-generation DM plug-in hybrid tech, a 200 km electric range, and a 1,100 km combined range, plus upgraded zero-gravity second-row seats. On October 16 BYD also refreshed the Qin L DM-i, its high-volume family sedan, now claiming 2.9 L/100 km in charge-depleted fuel use, a 2,000 km total range, and a starting price of ¥99,800 — keeping the nameplate squarely in the heart of the mass market.

Li Auto L6 launches as the i6 readies its debut
Li Auto put the L6 on sale October 18: a mid-size extended-range SUV with a 1.5T range extender and dual motors, a 212 km pure-electric range, and a ¥249,800–279,800 price band. Meanwhile the annual-refresh Li Auto i6 is heading to a launch event on October 28, with show cars already in dealerships since October 11; the update focuses on faster charging and upgraded cabin comfort for the home-use pure-electric model, and the current generation starts at ¥249,800.
Week 42 orders cool after the holiday, BYD holds the line
Weekly order data for October 12–18 showed a clear post-holiday "hangover." BYD (Dynasty + Ocean) held the top spot at 51,000 units (+2%), but most brands fell: Geely Galaxy 18,400 (−48%), Leapmotor 16,200 (−11%), Changan Qiyuan 15,500 (+28%, the week's bright spot), Xiaomi 8,350 (−41%), Tesla 8,100 (−12%), Fangchengbao 7,300 (+12%), NIO group 7,100 (−3%), XPeng 6,300 (−8%), Harmony Intelligent Mobility 6,150 (−13%), and Li Auto 4,900 (−15%). The China Passenger Car Association reported October 1–11 retail at 4.59 million vehicles with NEV retail penetration at 61.2% and wholesale penetration as high as 78.1% — high penetration, but a year-on-year volume dip as the market normalizes.

MIIT's 412th batch reveals the next wave of models
The MIIT published its 412th batch of vehicle catalogs on October 16 with 349 new-energy models. Highlights include the AIVA ME7 (SAIC's Xiaodu-backed AI car, 800 km+ claimed range on a CATL pack), the full-size SUV 尚界 Z9, a next-generation BYD Han in both BEV and PHEV forms (45.36 kWh PHEV battery), a BYD Tang BEV, the Mercedes-Benz EQ C300L on LFP chemistry, the 奕境 X9 EV, a refreshed Lynk 900L with a 70 kWh PHEV battery, and Volkswagen's ID.AURA L5. The batch confirms how crowded the full-size SUV and mid-size sedan segments have become.
China's smart driving steps onto the global rule-making stage
Geely's Qianli HaoHan G-ASD and Momenta's R7 systems both obtained international certifications this week, a signal that Chinese advanced-driving stacks are moving from product export toward participating in global standards. Analysts frame it as a shift from "selling cars" to "exporting technology and rules," with replicable software-defined architectures localizing quickly in overseas markets.
Overseas: Chinese brands keep climbing in Europe, Brazil, and Thailand
September market data reinforced the export momentum. In Germany, Chinese brands sold 15,784 units for a 6.1% share (BYD 6,040) even as Tesla's Model Y took the model crown. In Brazil, BYD delivered 22,254 units, Chery 15,419, and Great Wall 8,964. In Thailand, Chinese brands held a 32.9% share. The trend line points to China's carmakers converting domestic scale into durable overseas positions.
Launch calendar: what's due this week
- Li Auto i6 — launch event October 28 (show cars in dealerships since October 11).
- Models from the MIIT 412th batch (AIVA ME7, 尚界 Z9, next-gen BYD Han/Tang, Lynk 900L, VW ID.AURA L5) are expected to open orders through late October and November.
