China EV Daily, Aug 31: Lotus fires the 900 GOLD twin-flagship, Arcfox Beta T1 reaches 550 km, and Beijing tightens NEV safety rules
China's NEV story on the last day of August was a tale of two speeds: a burst of premium and mass-market launches, and a sudden hardening of the regulatory floor. Lotus put its 900 GOLD electric twin-flagship on sale, Arcfox stretched the budget Beta T1 to 550 km, and three joint-venture nameplates (Hyundai, VW, MG) leaned on "Chinese-style pricing" to fight for share — while Beijing rolled out a mandatory NEV/ADAS safety standard, sketched its 15th Five-Year NEV plan, and opened a year-long production-consistency crackdown that has already named BYD and Geely.

1. Lotus ELETRE & EMEYA 900 GOLD launch — the 900-hp electric twin-flagship goes on sale
Lotus (莲花跑车) put its "900 GOLD" pure-electric twin-flagship on sale in China on August 31. The EMEYA 900 GOLD four-door GT starts at ¥918,000 (approx $129,600) and the ELETRE 900 GOLD performance SUV at ¥928,000 (approx $131,000); both had opened presales on August 12. Each pairs a dual-motor AWD system making 918 hp (918 PS) and 985 N·m on an 800 V architecture with a 102 kWh pack: the EMEYA covers 530 km CLTC, hits 0–100 km/h in 2.78 s and a 256 km/h top speed, while the ELETRE does 0–100 in 2.95 s and 265 km/h. Both standardize a "golden handling pack" — about 62 carbon-fiber parts, 10-piston carbon-ceramic brakes, active aero (active front splitter, rear diffuser, spoiler and grille), dual-chamber air suspension, 48 V active stabilizer and rear-wheel steering. Lotus also launched the Emira 420 Sport (≈¥1.08M, reported), its final mid-engine ICE sports car — a swan song as the Geely-owned marque keeps one foot in combustion.

2. Arcfox Beta T1 550 km long-range version launches from ¥76,800
BAIC's Arcfox (极狐) launched the Beta T1 550 km long-range version on August 31 — two trims, the 550 PRO and 550 MAX, at a limited-time ¥76,800–¥86,800 (approx $10,800–$12,300). It is the flagship of the Beta T1 line: a 55.6 kWh LFP pack delivers 550 km CLTC, the front motor makes 95 kW / 176 N·m, and 30–80% charging takes 21.9 minutes with 3.3 kW V2L discharge. At 4,375 × 1,860 × 1,572 mm on a 2,770 mm wheelbase (five seats), it carries an 8.8-inch cluster and 15.6-inch centre screen, L2 assistance (5 cameras + 12 ultrasonic radars), and — per Arcfox — has passed 100,000 cumulative sales since launch (8,628 units in July alone).

3. Lynk & Co 20 shows three colors — Z20-based EV with LiDAR, Q3 launch
Lynk & Co (领克) released official images of the Lynk & Co 20 in three colors (Camellia White, Anchor Red, Dune Beige) on August 31. Built on the Z20 basis, the 20 adds a LiDAR and a single rear motor rated at 245 kW on an LFP battery, and is expected to launch in Q3 2026. Full specifications and pricing are not yet disclosed; the teasers position it as the brand's mass-market smart EV play.

4. Beijing Hyundai Ioniq V opens pre-sale — a JV BEV at "Chinese-style" pricing
At the Chengdu show, Beijing Hyundai opened pre-sales for the Ioniq V, a pure-electric mid-size sedan in three trims at ¥119,900–¥139,900 (approx $16,900–$19,800), with up to 650 km CLTC range, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 cockpit chip and driver assistance supplied by Momenta. Pricing a joint-venture EV sedan from under ¥120,000 is a clear attempt to win back share with local-market economics rather than import-grade positioning.

5. SAIC VW ID. ERA 5S launches — VW's first global sedan with Urban NOA
SAIC Volkswagen launched the ID. ERA 5S at Chengdu, with a guide price of ¥119,900–¥149,900 and limited-time offers down to ¥89,900–¥119,900 (approx $12,700–$17,000). It is Volkswagen's first sedan globally to support Urban NOA, riding the "Xingyun Zhixing" system and "Golden Hybrid" powertrain for a combined range beyond 2,000 km — a plug-in/hybrid layout aimed squarely at China's long-distance pragmatism.

6. MG 07 launches — BEV + hybrid, 59,000 pre-orders in 24 days
SAIC MG launched the MG 07 in seven variants spanning BEV and hybrid powertrains at ¥105,900–¥156,900 (approx $15,000–$22,200) after limited-time subsidies (down from a ¥125,900–¥165,900 pre-sale). Every variant standardizes mCDC intelligent electromagnetic suspension, and the ¥115,900 hybrid LiDAR variant adds advanced driving assistance. SAIC reported over 59,000 pre-orders within 24 days — a manufacturer claim, not an independent figure.

7. Mandatory national safety standard for NEVs and ADAS approved
On August 31 the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) approved a mandatory national standard, Technical Conditions for Motor Vehicle Operation (《机动车运行安全技术条件》), effective July 1, 2027, explicitly tightening safety requirements for new-energy vehicles and intelligent-driving applications. It is the clearest signal yet that Beijing will write ADAS and battery safety into binding law rather than guidelines.

8. MIIT sketches the 15th Five-Year NEV plan: charging "county to county, township to township"
At a State Council press conference on August 31, the MIIT outlined the 15th Five-Year Plan for Intelligent-Connected New Energy Vehicles, built on four pillars — product supply, supporting environment, industry governance and international cooperation. The headline infrastructure goal: charging stations covering every county and charging piles every township, as the sector shifts from scale expansion to high-quality development.

9. Four ministries open a year-long production-consistency crackdown
Also on August 31, the MIIT, Ministry of Public Security, Ministry of Ecology and Environment and SAMR jointly launched a one-year special campaign on vehicle production consistency and quality, using unannounced inspections and random sample sealing to target "quick-to-market" cars, over-promised ADAS and illegal OTA updates. The move follows an August 28 MIIT disclosure of typical production-consistency violations that named BYD and Geely — a direct shot at irrational competition in the NEV sector.

10. Henan aims for 1 million NEVs produced this year
Henan province's government office issued second-half economic measures on August 31 that call for consolidating emerging industries and expanding NEV capacity, with a target of 1 million NEV units produced across the year — part of a broader central-China push to anchor battery and vehicle manufacturing.

Tracking (no new progress): Two heavyweight debuts are set for September 2 — the refreshed Li Auto MEGA (four LiDARs, rear-wheel steering) and the BYD Sea Lion 08 (BEV up to 900 km CLTC / DM-i PHEV; presale ¥230,000–¥280,000). Both were previewed earlier this week; we'll cover them on launch day rather than repeat here.
