China NEV Daily: BYD Qin MAX Hits Market from $14K, Sealion 08 Debuts, Fangchengbao Tai 9 Revealed at Chengdu (Aug 23, 2026)

The 2026 Chengdu Auto Show (Aug 21–30) rolled into its third day with a wave of fresh launches spanning battery-electric, plug-in hybrid, and range-extended powertrains. Today's edition leads with genuinely new metal — BYD's Qin MAX sedan going on sale, the Sealion 08 SUV world premiere, and Fangchengbao's full-size Tai 9 — then covers the foreign-JV fightback (Hyundai, VW Anhui, Mazda), Huawei's five-brand HIMA milestone, and the latest policy and export signals. Models we already covered in detail on Aug 20–22 appear only as one-line follow-ups at the end.

1. BYD Qin MAX goes on sale: a B-segment sedan from RMB 99,900

BYD Qin MAX

BYD's Dynasty Network has launched the Qin MAX, the brand's first true B-segment sedan, slotting between the Qin Plus and the Han. Prices start at RMB 99,900 (approximately $14,050 USD) and top out at RMB 143,900 (approximately $20,250 USD), with both DM-i plug-in hybrid and pure-electric versions on offer.

  • Body: 4,866 × 1,880 × 1,495 mm, wheelbase 2,820 mm; fastback roof, half-hidden door handles, full-width woven taillight.
  • DM-i: 1.5L engine (74 kW) + 175 kW motor; CLTC electric range 230 km or 320 km.
  • EV: second-generation Blade battery with flash charging; 120 kW / 240 kW rear motors; CLTC range 530–630 km. Cold-weather test: 10%→70% in 5 minutes, 10%→97% in 9 minutes at −30°C.
  • Standard comfort kit: 10-point massage/ventilated/heated front seats, 50 W wireless charging,车载冰箱 (car fridge), DiLink 150 cabin; optional God's Eye B LiDAR ADAS.

Overseas note: The Qin MAX is a China-market launch. BYD's Qin/Qin Plus nameplate is sold in several overseas markets (Southeast Asia, Latin America, parts of Europe), but the MAX — with its longer wheelbase and China-specific trim — currently has no overseas variant announced; export specs (charging port, ADAS, battery size) would likely differ.

2. BYD Sealion 08 world premiere: a 5.1-metre, 900 km large SUV

BYD Sealion 08

BYD's Ocean Network unveiled the Sealion 08, a large five/six-seat SUV and the network's sole world-premiere model at Chengdu. Blind orders are open at RMB 230,000–280,000 (approximately $32,400–$39,400 USD) — DM-i from 230k–260k, EV from 250k–280k — with a formal launch expected in H2 2026.

  • Dimensions: 5,115 × 1,999 × 1,800 mm, wheelbase 3,030 mm; drag coefficient 0.27 Cd.
  • DM-i: 1.5T (115 kW) + 200 kW motor (dual-motor 200+200 kW); WLTC EV range 275/300 km, CLTC up to 400 km.
  • EV: 92.093 / 115.072 kWh batteries; CLTC range 710 / 800 / 900 km; single motors 320/370 kW, dual 215+370 kW.

  • Interior: 21.4-inch rear-roof screen, 25-speaker Devialet audio, fridge, rear control panel; six-seat version adds sliding zero-gravity seats.

Overseas note: "Sealion" is a global BYD nameplate (Sealion 6 / Sealion 7 sold overseas as DM-i and BEV), but the China-market Sealion 08 is larger and more richly equipped than current overseas Sealion models — battery size, charging port, and ADAS feature set would differ if exported.

3. Fangchengbao Tai 9 global debut: a range-extended full-size "box" SUV

Fangchengbao Tai 9

Fangchengbao (BYD's personalisation sub-brand) revealed the Tai 9, its first full-size plug-in-hybrid six-seat SUV and the brand's flagship "9-series" entry, at Chengdu. It debuts BYD's new DMS hybrid platform and is aimed squarely at the Li Auto L9 / AITO M9 segment, with a launch price around RMB 400,000 (approximately $56,300 USD) and a Q4 2026 on-sale target.

  • Body: 5,270 × 1,999 × 1,850 mm (1,880 with rack), wheelbase 3,130 mm; hard "box"造型 with ring-shaped light bar and split tailgate.
  • Powertrain: 1.5T (115 kW) + front/rear dual motors (total 400 kW); 66.48 kWh LFP battery; WLTC EV range 310 km; CLTC combined range exceeds 2,300 km.
  • Chassis: unibody construction, Yun'nei-P Ultra hydraulic suspension, rear-wheel steering (±7°); 192-line LiDAR, God's Eye B (city + highway NOA, valet parking).
  • Cabin: 30-inch panoramic long screen, optional 1.1 m PHUD; U8L-style split tailgate, 2,000 kg tow rating.

Alongside it, Fangchengbao opened pre-orders for the Fangcheng S sport sedan (interior now revealed) at RMB 230,000–280,000, with a September delivery target.

Overseas note: Fangchengbao is essentially China-only today. No overseas variant of the Tai 9 has been announced; if exported, battery sourcing, emissions compliance, and ADAS would need re-homologation.

Joint-venture brands pushed back at Chengdu with three freshly priced electrified models, signalling a more China-tailored product strategy.

Overseas note: The IONIQ name is global (Hyundai's EV sub-brand), but this China-specific IONIQ V sedan may differ from overseas IONIQ models. The VW Yu 08 and Mazda EZ-60 are China-market joint-venture products; their overseas counterparts (where they exist) use different platforms and powertrains.

7. Chinese EVs accelerate into Africa as Chery buys Nissan's South Africa plant

Chinese EV exports to Africa

As Western observers warn of Chinese "overcapacity," African buyers are embracing cheaper Chinese vehicles, batteries, and technology to fill local mobility and industrialisation gaps. Chery acquired Nissan's South African plant in July, while local assembly and battery-material production are expanding in Morocco and Egypt. The shift lets African economies retain more technology, jobs, and value locally.

Applies to: Global readers; specific to African market-development strategy, not to EU/US sales which face separate tariffs and rules.

8. CPCA: August NEV penetration hits 65.8%, a new record

China NEV penetration rate

The China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) estimates August passenger-vehicle retail at 1.58 million units (+8.1% MoM), with new-energy vehicles at 1.04 million and a penetration rate of 65.8% — a fresh high. The reading underscores how quickly electrified vehicles are becoming the default choice in the world's largest car market.

Applies to: China domestic market; overseas penetration rates remain far lower (EU ~20%, US ~10%).

9. Policy & standards: China leads solid-state battery IEC standard, BAS mandate, hydrogen pilot

EV policy and standards

A busy week for regulation and standards:

  • Solid-state battery IEC standard: China's proposal "Secondary lithium-ion batteries for EV traction — solid-state battery application guide, test items and conditions" was approved as the first-ever IEC international standard for solid-state batteries, with experts from France, Korea, and Japan participating. CATL, BYD, FAW, Chery, and GAC are all developing the tech.
  • Mandatory BAS standard: MIIT published for comment the Light-duty Vehicle Brake Assistance System (BAS) performance compulsory national standard — the "middle layer" between AEB and ESC — open for comment until Aug 27.
  • Hydrogen pilot: MIIT, MoF, and NDRC approved five city-clusters for a 4-year hydrogen application pilot (up to RMB 1.6B per cluster, RMB 8B total), targeting 100,000 fuel-cell vehicles by 2030.
  • FAW strategy: China FAW unveiled its "SIGHT 531" plan covering L4 autonomy, all-solid-state batteries, V2G, and flying cars, with a 25 MWh solid-state pilot line and a 2027 mass-production goal.

Applies to: China regulatory framework; overseas readers should note these are domestic standards, though the IEC solid-state standard has global scope.
