Buying a Used EV in France in 2026: Battery Health, the New CEE Grant, and the Warranty Trap
France's used-EV market is maturing fast — and 2026 brought a genuinely new lever: a state-backed grant for second-hand electric cars that you can claim from September 1. But the real risk in a used EV has never been the motor; it's the battery and the fine print on the warranty. Here is a practical checklist for buying a used EV in France this year.

Start with the battery health, not the sticker price
The single most important number on a used EV is battery State of Health (SoH) — what percentage of its original capacity remains. A healthy pack sits at 80% or above; below that, real-world range drops noticeably and resale value falls faster. Several free or low-cost apps and a pre-purchase inspection can read SoH from the car's diagnostics, so ask the seller for a current reading rather than trusting the odometer alone.
For context, a new Chinese national durability standard (effective August 2026) defines a "healthy" pack as retaining at least 82% capacity after 5 years or 100,000 km, and at least 75% after 8 years or 160,000 km — a useful benchmark when judging a French-market car of any origin.
The new CEE grant: up to ~€337, or ~€2,000 for eligible buyers
From September 1, 2026, France added second-hand electric cars to its Energy Savings Certificates (CEE) scheme, funded by energy suppliers (EDF, Engie, TotalEnergies) rather than the state budget. The standard support is about €337 per vehicle (42,200 kWh cumac), running through September 1, 2030.
Eligibility conditions are strict:
- 100% electric (plug-in hybrids are excluded);
- first registered in France between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2023 — a vehicle first registered abroad and later imported is not eligible;
- bought or leased from a licensed professional dealer;
- battery health ≥ 80% (or remaining range ≥ 80% of type-approval range, or ≥ 200 km);
- you keep the vehicle (or lease) for at least 3 years.
For home-care and personal-service professionals, the grant is multiplied — roughly €2,000 per vehicle — provided the car costs no more than €25,000 including tax and weighs under 1,800 kg, for transactions started before January 1, 2027 and finalized before July 1, 2027. Notably, the CEE grant has no income requirement.
Don't ignore the bonus écologique for used cars
On top of the CEE grant, France's long-standing bonus écologique also applies to used EVs, up to about €4,000 — but it is means-tested (income caps apply), unlike the CEE grant. Stacking the two can meaningfully lower the effective price of an eligible used electric car, so compare dealer and operator offers before signing.
Watch the Crit'Air / ZFE angle
Used EVs are Crit'Air 0, which matters more every year. France's low-emission zones (ZFE) are progressively banning Crit'Air 3 and above from city centers — Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Strasbourg and Nantes among them. A used EV sidesteps those restrictions entirely and is future-proofed against tightening rules, whereas a cheap used combustion or even a Crit'Air 2 hybrid may face limits sooner than buyers expect.
The warranty trap: "lifetime" rarely follows the car
Here is the catch most buyers miss. A new EV typically carries a 2–5 year manufacturer warranty plus a battery warranty of about 8 years / 160,000 km. But many brands' marketing "three-electric lifetime warranty" (battery, motor, electronics) is limited to the first non-commercial owner — the moment the car is sold, that lifetime cover can evaporate, leaving only the basic statutory warranty.
Before buying, confirm in writing: (1) the remaining basic battery warranty period and mileage; (2) whether any extended/"lifetime" cover transfers to a second owner; (3) service history at authorized centers (some brands void coverage if maintenance lapsed). A clean, transferable warranty is worth more than a slightly lower price.
Practical pre-purchase checklist
- Verify SoH (≥80% target) from diagnostics, not the seller's word.
- Confirm the CEE grant eligibility — French first-registration 2017–2023, pro dealer, 3-year hold.
- Check the bonus écologique income cap if you plan to claim it.
- Read the ZFE rules for your city; an EV is Crit'Air 0.
- Get the remaining battery warranty in writing and confirm transferability.
- Budget for Contrôle Technique (€60–90 every 2 years, first at 4 years) and the Carte Grise regional tax.
China Angle
China's used-EV market — far larger than France's — is solving the same battery-trust problem with standards rather than grants. On May 1, 2026, GB/T 47136—2026, the first national standard for assessing in-service EV battery health and safety, took effect, letting buyers check a battery's true state via the car system or an app. A companion durability standard (effective August 2026) quantifies acceptable degradation: ≥ 82% capacity at 5 years / 100,000 km, and ≥ 75% at 8 years / 160,000 km, with on-screen SoH display error capped at 5%. A battery "digital identity" rule (effective April 1, 2026) makes each pack traceable across its whole life.
On warranties, China is also shifting from "warranty follows the owner" to "warranty follows the car": the basic three-electric warranty is bound to the VIN and transfers with the vehicle, and brands including Dongfeng Nissan, Roewe, FAW Bestune, and BYD's certified-used channel now let lifetime cover move to the second owner. But as of October 2026, several high-volume brands (BYD's mainstream line, GAC Aion, Chery, Deepal, Leapmotor, Neta) still restrict lifetime warranty to the first owner — so the "read the fine print" rule applies to Chinese cars too. China's used-NEV transactions reached 685,400 units in the first five months of 2026, up 25.7% year-on-year (Sina Auto), a sign the segment is scaling as trust improves.
