China EV News Today (Oct 12): VW ID.ERA 8X Launches, Xpeng G9L Debuts Globally at Paris, Li Auto Unveils Europe Plan
China's auto market roared back to life this week after the National Day holiday, with a wave of launches anchored by the VW ID.ERA 8X extended-range SUV and a strong Chinese presence at the 2026 Paris Motor Show. Here is today's roundup across BEV, PHEV and EREV.

VW ID.ERA 8X launches in China as a "German-engineered" extended-range SUV
SAIC Volkswagen launched the ID.ERA 8X on October 12, skipping the presale step and going straight to market. It is a large five-seat extended-range (EREV) SUV positioned below the bigger ID.ERA 9X, with four trims: Pro, Max, Max Long Range and Ultra Long Range.
The EREV powertrain pairs a 1.5T (EA211) range extender rated at 105 kW with 43% thermal efficiency (runs on 92-octane fuel) with an electric drive. Battery options are 51.1 kWh and 65.2 kWh; CLTC pure-electric range is 373 km (Pro) or up to 451 km (long-range), with a combined range of 1,602 km. It supports 800V fast charging (10–80% in about 16 minutes) and posts a 0–100 km/h time of 4.6 s in all-wheel-drive form, with a depleted-fuel consumption of 5.85 L/100 km.
Every variant gets a 192-line lidar and the Momenta R7 "world model" driving system (high-speed and urban NOA, valet-to-valet navigation); Max and above add dual-chamber air suspension. Volkswagen positioned the model in the ~250,000 yuan (approx. $35,000 USD) class, but at the time of writing the company had not disclosed final official pricing — only the "250k-class" positioning was confirmed.

Xpeng G9L makes its global debut at the Paris Motor Show
Xpeng opened global sales and announced European pricing for the G9L flagship AI SUV at the 2026 Paris Motor Show on October 12 (17:20 Beijing time). The G9L becomes the fourth Xpeng model slated for European local production as the brand pushes its "In Europe, for Europe" strategy.
Xpeng says it has passed 100,000 overseas deliveries, more than 60,000 of them in Europe, and that international deliveries exceeded 20,000 units in Q2 2026 (+81% year-on-year). Alongside the G9L, the L03 coupe SUV is being shown in Paris with the brand's first large-scale NGP autonomous-driving test ride outside China; the MONA L05 SUV was also unveiled ahead of a Q4 launch, and Xpeng reported the L03 has passed 12,000 orders in Europe.

Changan puts the Avatr T09 on the global stage at Paris
Changan Automobile used the Paris show to give the Avatr T09 its global debut, alongside Changan Nevo and multiple Deepal EV models, while outlining its European localization roadmap under the "海纳百川" (Go Global) strategy. The move underscores how Chinese OEMs are now treating Paris as a launchpad for Europe-bound products rather than a showcase afterthought.

Chery recalls 8,878 OMODA 5 units in Malaysia over rear-axle welding
Chery is recalling 8,878 OMODA 5 vehicles in Malaysia due to insufficient rear-axle welding that could pose a fracture risk under extreme conditions. The campaign is a reminder that China's fast-growing export brands must scale after-sales and quality control as overseas volumes climb.

China and the EU reach a hybrid-trade understanding; Brussels says exports could be halved
China and the EU have reached an understanding on rules covering plug-in hybrid and range-extender vehicle exports to the bloc. The EU trade commissioner said the deal includes halving hybrid vehicle exports to the EU, while China said the arrangement complies with WTO rules. The outcome matters for Chinese PHEV and EREV makers that have leaned on Europe for overseas growth.

Tracking this week's launches
- BYD Da Han (pure-electric D-class sedan) launches October 13; presale is 249,900–299,900 yuan (approx. $34,800–$41,800 USD), with a 102.3 kWh second-generation Blade battery, up to 1,008 km CLTC and 9-minute 10–97% flash charging. (Covered in our Oct 10 roundup; launch is tomorrow.)
- Jetour Traveler 7 / Traveler 7 C-DM launches October 14; the C-DM plug-in hybrid pairs a 1.5T with three motors (375 kW) and a 45.12 kWh CATL battery for 251 km CLTC electric range and 1,400 km combined.
- BYD second-generation Seagull has opened pre-orders ahead of a later launch; the new version is 425 mm longer than its predecessor.
China Angle
Today's roundup shows two intertwined China stories: at home, extended-range and plug-in hybrids keep pushing into mainstream price bands (the ID.ERA 8X brings lidar and air suspension to the ~250k-yuan class), while abroad, Chinese brands are shifting from "export and hope" to local production and owned networks (Xpeng and Geely in Europe, Changan's Avatr T09 debut, Geely's Canada entry). The EU hybrid-trade understanding is the clearest signal yet that the easy-export era for PHEV/EREV is closing — exactly why local manufacturing and swap/charging ecosystems matter for the next phase.
